FAQ

Is acupuncture treatment covered by MSP?

Medical Services Plan of BC (MSP) funding for acupuncture treatment is available for low income family under the condition of MSP premium assistance (family income below $30,000). MSP pays for a combined annual limit of 10 times visits for acupuncture treatment, massage therapy, physiotherapy, chiropractic, naturopathy and non-surgical podiatry. MSP covers $23.00 per each visit which is deducted from the treatment fees.
Extended health benefits vary from plan to plan and usually coverage for acupuncture therapy is between 70-100% of treatment fees. You should check your benefit booklet or contact your insurance provider in order to get some information in detail on the coverage on your treatment.

What is acupuncture & how can it help?

Acupuncture is a complex system of care used to maintain health, relieve symptoms, and improve well-being without any side effect. At the centre of this ancient medicine is the concept of Qi or vital energy , which protects the body from illness, pain, disease. This energy flows through the body in pathways called Meridians that are connected to specific organs and glands. A person’s health is influenced by the quality and balance of Qi. If it is out of balance or stagnated, illness and symptoms can be happened. Acupuncture smoothes the stream of Qi and also it removes the stagnation of Qi and blood.

Is acupuncture safe?

Any one has never died from acupuncture applied by a trained and licensed Acupuncturist. Needles generally cause no bleeding or pain, and the needles used are disposable. Acupuncturists are trained in exact location, angle as well as depth of insertion of the acupuncture needle to avoid any injuries.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Generally speaking it does not hurt, although there are a few points on the body that are more sensitive than others, such as the palms of the hands or the feet. It is very common for people to feel a pressure, heaviness, or slight electrical sensation at the needle site. These are all signs that the therapeutic effect is taking place. An acupuncture needle is approximately 25-50 times thinner than a hypodermic needle used to draw your blood. That means that we can fit about 15-25 acupuncture needles inside of one hypodermic needle.

Does acupuncture cause harmful side effects?

No, one of the great advantages of acupuncture is that there are no side effects sometimes, other than other than an occasional bruise

What are the acupuncture points?

The acupuncture points are the areas along a meridian where the energy comes together and rises to the surface of the body. Therefore, it can be more easily accessed and redirected with the use of a needle.

Are the needles sterilized or are they used again?

We are using needles just one time. They are wrapped and sterilized by the manufacturer. They are opened only when they are ready to be used, and afterwards, needles are disposed in a medical waste container.

How does TCM practitioner diagnose for your treatment?

During your first consultation, the practitioner will get some information for your treatment with checking a complete history and detailed evaluation of your condition. They will ask questions on many different aspects of your life, not only the condition for which you are seeking treatment. Afterwards, the practitioner will take your pulse, examine your tongue, and sometimes palpate your abdomen or check for tender areas along the meridians.

How many sessions do I have?

Generally, treatments are done on a weekly basis, usually twice a week for the first two weeks. As the symptom has been controlled, the treatments are done less frequently. Conditions that have been around for a long time usually take more treatments to recover than ones that have come about recently. Your treatment sessions will be determined after the first visit and reassessed whenever you come to the clinic.

"I highly recommend Dr. Lee’s Acupuncture and Herb Clinic. I have been having regular treatments with Dr. Lee for over 4 years now. I first went to see Dr. Lee to improve carpal tunnel symptoms that were preventing me from working. After a few visits, I discovered that I gained many other unexpected benefits from his treatments, so I kept going back. Receiving regular acupuncture from Dr. Lee helps me stay balanced physically, mentally and emotionally. I get fewer headaches, my mood is better, I sleep better, my digestion is improved, I can manage stress better, and I have less pain in my body. Dr. Lee’s treatments improve my quality of life dramatically. He is very knowledgeable in the field of acupuncture and herbal medicine; we have the most interesting conversations. He is calm, attentive, kind, generous and understanding. He genuinely cares about improving his client’s issues and concerns. I feel so fortunate to have met him. His home office is close to my house and his rates are very reasonable. I continue to have regular treatments with him to keep feeling good all year long! Thank you Dr. Lee!!"
